Hello everyone,

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR RELEASES
June 28, 2010

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

The Bureau of Reclamation will be increasing the release from Navajo Reservoir to 950 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. Releases are made for the authorized purposes of the Navajo Unit, and to attempt to maintain a target base flow through the endangered fish critical habitat reach of the San Juan River (Farmington to Lake Powell).

The San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program recommends a target base flow of between 500 cfs and 1,000 cfs through the critical habitat area. The target base flow is calculated as the weekly average of gaged flows throughout the critical habitat area.

This scheduled release change is subject to changes in river flows and weather conditions. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Page at (970)385-6560 or e-mail him at ppage@usbr.gov.

Hello everyone,

The river is murky due to late lake turnover but we're still catching lots of trout and other clients who bought genuine Yong's flies and fish their own. Not sure when the river will clear up but currently the visibility is about 2 feet and lots of dead algae floating down depends on how many fishermen are upstream wading. That being said in this tough condition we are still enjoying dry fly fishing and sight fishing on certain areas and had great success. Midges are the main menu for the San Juan trout but last couple of days there were some prolific baetis hatches on main channel around noon and couldn't keep trout away from Andy's Candy Mayfly pattern.

We got some nice big trout from LA, MF and UF as you can see on recent youtube videos.

Three of us, my brother John, webmaster John and I went to fish Taylor River, CO and surrounding area couple of weekends ago and had a great time even though it was cold and windy, check out my youtube to see how bad the weather was there but very good fishing. This time we stayed at Almont Resort because my little brother want to be near the fishing spot and I made a very good choice. Our room (house on the river) was nice and clean which owner Harold gave me the rate I couldn't refuse and food at the restaurant was very good to excellent. My brother is already talking about next year trip to Taylor River!

By now lots of you are wondering when the spring runoff will start and I have no answer at this time but according to BOR office email to someone who runs fly shop saying that there's no current plan for spring runoff this year because of decrease on inflow. My guess is that there has to be some runoff because I made a fishing trip to central CO couple of weeks ago and the snow pack haven't started melt, Wolf Creek Pass was covered with ice and snow but cleared up on the way back. I know that we had colder than average spring and last few days we're having 70's temp therefore the runoff may occur 2-3 weeks late but I'm not in charge of outflow so don't count on it.

The best flies were: Yong Flash> Yong Blood> Andy's Candy Midge and Mayfly both> Yong Wing>Yong Special> AK-Salad in order.

Happy fishing!

Here are recent letters from you:

Andy,
I had a great time on the San Juan last weekend the yountube video was awesome. It"s great to get to show my dad what he missed by not coming on the trip this year. Maybe I'll get to bring him later on in the year. Keep up the good work!
Tyler Phillips

Hi Brother Andy,
I just got home and I have viewed the pictures you sent by e-mail. A great job-Thank you so much. Andy, I'm so sorry that I forgot to give you a tip for your excellent service. How is the best way for me to send some money to you?
Thank you,
Pastor Mel Sumrall

Andy,
Thanks for fishing with us last Tuesday, was fun.
Tom

Hi Andy,
I went to Beavers Bend Oklahoma to fish last weekend and I caught 110 fish in 21/2 day. It was awesome!! I used size 22 Yong Midge pattern all weekend long with different colors. At the beginning I could not land the fish but with little practice I started to landed them easily. I even landed a couple of 16 inches (my biggest fish so far) Thank you for all of your advice....

Also, could you recommend me a reel for 3wt rod (not an expensive but a good one)? Thank you,
Atlihan Binoz

Hi Andy,
Thank you so much for sending the pics! You have been a great friend and I'm proud to say I've known you for 20 years. I really appreciate all the fishing tips and fly selections over the years. Actually catching fish is a lot more fun than just "fishing" for them. It feels pretty cool to be catching more fish than the other guys fishing in the same water I am.

I'm glad the referral worked out for you. Brian and Rocky were some nice guys and they really wanted to learn to master the Juan. Thanks for taking care of them.

Next time I come up, I would love to be your camera man for your guide trips. Believe it or not, I am pretty good with a camera and it would free you up to actually be in the pics/videos with your customers and their trophy fish. You could be the only guide on the river that could send your customers full length videos of their experience. Hmmmm.

In between shots, I could be fishing quietly near by and, by listening to you teach your customers, I could be learning more about the world famous AK fly fishing system.
Craig

Thanks for coming to the Almont Resort. Great website.

AK,
Nice photos and video, thanks for the great day. Not too often that you will get all 3 of us together to fish.

In the meantime, take care and good fishing.

Andy,
You probably don't remember me, but I spent a great day with you on the San Juan a few years back. My wife and I will be in Telluride in early July and would like to fish with you. What days would be available the week of July 12. We'd drive down for a half day session. I'll call you next week After Easter.

Looking forward to seeing you again. What great fish you put me on!!
Thanks,

Hello everyone,

Note: I have nice fishing shirts for sale (Columbia Sportswear Long Sleeve For Men UPF 30 Orange and light lime color) with my own art work embroidery design which was done at RCI www.rcibyjk.com where they used best German threads, thanks John. I only have limited quantities (mostly in large size, few medium, few EX large) so order now before they are gone like my hats. It's $45 each (plus tax for NM resident) and $5 for shipping.

Fishing has been simply great for us both using my nymphs and dry fly patterns. The river is clear up to 4', flow at around 480cfs and there have been prolific midges and mayfly (baetis) hatches occurring every day. Those who enjoy tossing larger dry fly then wait for baetis hatch which starts around noon, it happens sooner on overcast days. The crowds are starting to show up but not like 2-3 yrs ago, haven't seen parking lot gets full with vehicles yet. Well, spring is here to stay and I can feel the temp rise little by little each day and soon it'll be summer. So far we had more than average snowpack not counting upcoming few spring showers near future which is very good for rest of the year fishing. It's not like those old days but the fishing below Texas Hole is improving since we haven't had much flash floods last couple of years during summer months where Kiddie Hole wash dump much silt to downstream each time. I just hope they fix up the KH wash soon so we can keep the river where it is and not destroying it. I'm glad that I have the instruction video which contains old Kiddie Hole and downstream footages to show people what really happened last few years and what can we do to minimize future damage. Anyway, come and fish soon before the spring runoff if you can.

The best flies were: Yong Flasher> Andy's Candy (both midge/ mayfly)> i-Yong Special> AK-Salad> Yong Wing in order.

Happy fishing!

Andy Kim

Here are recent letters from you:

Hi Andy,
Thank you again for two great days on the San Juan. Having you instruct Nate and David on their very first ever experience fly fishing was truly memorable. The fact that they had never held or cast with a fly rod before, but were able to start catching trout immediately, was a real eye opener for them. Both commented that they were literally surrounded by more experienced anglers, "but we were the ones catching the most fish!" Having personally had the same experience, as you continue to teach me, is an example that the correct flies makes a HUGE difference. When Nate caught his large rainbow, there was an angler looking on, who had just stepped out of the river, who had just finished fishing in about the same area. When he heard this was Nathan and David's first day fly fishing ever, he said, "It took me seven years fly fishing before I caught a fish that big."

Another interesting experience was early on, when my "boys" (adult men with seven young children between them) started catching fish within 15 minutes of stepping into Kiddy Hole. There were others fishing near by who weren't catching. When you were going back and forth between your two novices to land their more than ten double hookups in short succession, I went back to my truck to get another net. Fortunately, we were only 100 yards from the parking area and it was before 9:30 AM. When I got back to the truck, therer was a fellow rigging up his rod who looked up and asked, "Are you done for the day?" I said, "No, my first time fly fishing sons are catching so many fish, we need more landing nets!" I am sure he thought I was in my "fish story liar" mode and was saying to himself, "RIGHT"! Later that afternoon, I recognized him fishing near us, when we were still doing most of the catching by a magnitude of five or six to one and we smiled broadly at each other.

The experience for me was one of forced independence and self reliance when you were helping your truly novice clients. My sight fishing nymphing and expecially my dry fly success were frankly surprising. I guess it is like learning to ride a bike, Eventually the training wheels come off and you discover that you dad isn't still running along side holding you up by the back of the seat.
And thanks for making us famous by adding our trip to your YouTube video clips. I'll see you in July when I bring my entomologist son, Matt Terry, to fish with you. He has been fly fishing before, but hopefully hasn't developed too many bad habits for you to break.

Fishing was good. Very good dry fly on the Roaring Fork. Just got back today, I-70 was closed for last several days due to rock slide.

Fished Sunday on the Frying Pan with nymphs. Fished a couple days on the RF with some dry flies. Midges were coming off from about 11:00 to 2:00, fished Andy's Candy midge size 22 and 24. Had a great time while they were hatching. They would take when I got good drift. Nothing like AC midge. Most of the fish on the RF were browns, about 12 to 14 inches. Fun!

John was there on Sunday and Richard came over for a couple of days. How's work? I'm sure SJ is fishing excellent for you. Talk with you later.
Tom

Hey Andy,
Shirt came in today, beautiful shirt, great color and nice needle work. I'll wear it with pride! It is a little big but not that bad, sleeves are perfect. I'd rather have it to big than to small. Thanks again for including me, keep on rockin.

Hello everyone,

Important notice: NM State Park changed the plan, there will be no park closing rest of the year. Also I have nice fishing shirts ( Columbia Sportswear Backcountry Bahama II PFG Fishing Shirt - Long Sleeve For Men UPF 30 Orange or light lime color) with my own art work embroidery design which was done at RCI www.rcibyjk.com where they used best German threads are on sale now, thanks John. I only have limited quantities (mostly in large size, few medium, few EX large) so order now if you are interested. It's $45 each plus tax.

Well, the fishing pressure has been light although we didn't get any more snow for a week now. I believe spring is here though because we saw few Red winged Blackbird past weekend and they do know when spring has sprung. The rest of the week temp look good, all in the 50's and the river visibility is very good up to 4 feet.

I hear lots of people complaining about how bad the fishing has been for last couple of years but that's not true for us as you can read about customer testimonial letters. We are still catching lots of little to big ones, check out my youtube videos via my website link www.yspecial.com.

Noticed few local fishermen going after spawning trout on shallow riffles where less than 1' deep braids past weekend and I see these kind of fisherman every winter. Those guys snagged couple of fish and kept on looking for more, this kind of action will disrupt the spawning process of trout which also causes to stressed them out and finally leave the area. There are so many non spawning trout (95% or more) available on the river but they couldn't catch them so they look for spawning beds contain big venerable trout where their backs and tails are sticking out and snag few. What's funny is that they proudly take photos of snagged trout. I hear often that San Juan trout do not reproduce because they are sterile from the hatchery but they are wrong. I have proof, seen and taken few photos of less than several one inch length trout and even one with egg sack still on it therefore if we leave them alone then there will be more natural reproduction like brown trout. FYI they do not stock brown trout here, they are all naturally reproduced. Someday I'd like to see signs saying that no fishing for spawning trout.

So far the river has been stocked heavily with rainbow trout last year, 3 inch - 9 inch range and few hundreds 16 inch at TH total 800,000 if I remember right, plus 20,000 more Triploid rainbow trout on 23rd February this year and they are all spread out pretty much. Some of those small ones are grown up to 16 inch but mostly 10 inch - 12 inch depends on where you fish. If you are after quality trout (20 inch plus) then I recommend to fish below the dam to UF and TX hole down to LF area.

We have had some great dry fly fishing days past month again especially around noon to 4 PM, about 70% midges and 30% mayfly (baetis) hatches have been occurring each day and my guess is that this will continue till spring runoff so those who enjoy dry fly fishing better pack your rod and come fish soon.

The recent debate I hear is that they (other guides) are trying to add $5 fishing license fee for the next season exclusively to improve the San Juan fishery and it may or may not happen. I think that the river needs one main improvement though which is KH wash or Rex wash diversion as it used to be before the permanent fixture restrooms were built but they have been spending money on wrong places (planting boulders downstream and such) and no one takes my opinion seriously, oh well. Those old days only minor amount of silt from flash floods were deposited while passing through dense grass and plants before get to the river and those who bought my instruction video can check out the huge difference before and after.

The best flies were: Yong Flasher> AC midge> AC mayfly> Yong Special> Yong Wing> Yong Blood in order.

Happy fishing!

Hi Andy,
Once again it was a pleasure meeting you and fishing with you (i.e. learning all the proper things about fly fishing).

It took me 11 hours to get home. I took I-40 thru Flagstaff rather than go thru show Lo. I was too tired to drive through the mountains. I appreciate you emailing me any photos you took. I will be in touch sometime in two weeks to firm up our plans. Cheers,
Saad Zara

Hello Mr. Kim!
Wow! Thank-you for the in-depth reply! I didn't mean to cause you so much typing, but I am happy that you chose to do so!

Not sure where I found your recipe, but you can bet I'm on a search for that Fly Fisherman issue from 10 years back! I hope to see more photos of your creations and maybe learn what colors and body shapes would work best on My East Tennessee Rivers.

Thanks again and if I tie Yong Special that I am *extra* proud of I will send you a photo of it for "grading"
All the best and we hope to see you again next year.
best!!

Hey Andy,
It has been years since my father, George, and I fished with you on the SJ. I hope all is well with you! I saw some years ago that you finally gave up the secret recipe for the YS fly in Fly Fisherman magazine. That fly is the best fly ever for imitating midge pupa. I have used it exclusively on many of the tailwaters here in CA and it out produces everything else. Anyway, it is no surprise to you I am sure.

Well, I am happy to tell you that I left my corporate life about 10 years ago and got into the fly fishing industry. My first entry into the industry was as a guide. I built a very successful guide service on the Northern CA rivers (Yuba, American, Feather, Stanislaus, and Mokelumne Rivers) guiding about 200 days a year. Then, about 5 years ago I began my fly fishing travel business and have been booking clients all over the world for fishing adventures. My days fishing with you inspired my interest in this great sport and now I am happy to call it my profession. It has been about a decade now in this industry and I can say that I am happy than ever pursuing my passion. Also, I am married and have our first baby on the way (due in May).

Anyway, I just wanted to say HI to you and wish you well.My father and I still talk about our great days of fishing with you. We plan to make a return visit sometime in the next year and will give you a call to book a few days on the SJ. Well, take care and good fishing to you!

Dear Andrew,
I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users. Details of the Recommendation: "I found Andy through an article in one of the flyfishing publications and hired him for a day at Navajo Dam on the San Juan. Let's just say it was a fishing life altering experience. I have never since experienced a guide that could put you on fish and after fish, catch fish with the precision of a sniper and teach you how to do it on your own. I have sent a number of friends traveling in the area to Andy with the same results. Get in shape before you go it'll be a day you won't want to stop and you won't forget - I haven't and it's probably 10+ years since we first meet. What a character too!" Week of January 17, 2010

Hello everyone,

Happy new year and wish you a lot more trout on your line this year!

I was gone to CA to take care of my parents for three weeks last December and both of them are doing fine now.
Thanks for your concern and prayers.

Important note: NM State Park will be closed on
Tuesday, 2/9/2010
Tuesday, 3/2/2010
Tuesday, 3/23/2010

This means you can not fish the state park boundary including Cottonwood camp area.

Reminder, there will be no kill on entire quality water now although there are no signs posted.

Winter started early again just like the last couple of years which means we'll have early spring so get ready for your trip to San Juan River. Although it has been cold, the fish were in a feeding frenzy each time I went fishing. See my recent youtube videos (go to my website and click on youtube button). Because of the adverse weather conditions there weren't many fishermen on the river except on weekends. Still we're the ones catching most of the trout using dry or nymph pattern of mine.

Also I have been using my new fly pattern and caught lots of trout all the way to end of quality water. I used this fly (about 90% visual resemblance) on Navajo Reservoir few years ago fishing with Jim P who is my client and lives in Farmington on his bass boat. We caught several small mouth bass with it and with slight modification it has been working very well for SJ trout. It's going to be another hot fly for me to use on guide trips from now on!

Here's good news for sight fishing fishermen, the visibility of the river is still up to 3' so come on get it but leave the spawning trout alone because there are plenty non breeding ones.

I checked out the reservoir a few days ago and noticed that it didn't turn over much this year at all which means we'll have a great rest of winter fishing.

The best flies were: i-Yong Special> AKSS> Andy's Candy> Yong Flash> Yong Wing in order.

Happy fishing!

Week of October 26, 2009

Hello everyone,

First you need to know the new rule on the San Juan, all quality water is now catch and release only and it started last September 15th. It has been some time I worked on fishing report but that doesn't mean fishing was bad rather I was lazy.

Fishing has been very good to awesome on both nymph and dry fly fishing as usual for us from below the dam all the way down to bait fishing section although the river flow changed time to time. So far most fish have been taking AC midge, regular and improved Yong Special and Yong Flasher but expect for them to start take Yong Wings and AC mayfly so stock them up if you are coming to fish soon.

BTW, I was gone for couple of weeks to take care my father in CA in September and last couple of day of the trip my brother John and I fished inside Yosemite NP and caught lots of trout. This was my first trip to YNP and they were mostly 6"-8" range but I landed two nice ones, 14" and 17" and showed him the big trout photos to a park ranger there which surprised him because he never seen anyone catching that size of trout out of Merced River inside of the park. Most of them I caught with using Y-Ugly but the 17" took AC mayfly when PMD was hatching.

Back to the San Juan news, I'm predicting very good dry fly fishing rest of the year so if you enjoy dry fly fishing check with me for current info via email or phone call. Also start to carry warm gloves, socks and jacket because it's that time of the year, it can be in mid 30's or lower in the morning fishing from now on.

Here's a different note, I need your support on this. I bought lots of fly fishing stuff from Cabela's and recommended you all these years but I am not going to shop there anymore and so should you. It seems to me they grew too big and their warranty service has gone down on rods and reels I bought from them therefore I can't recommend you to shop there anymore. I have the document they sent me which proves that they don't care about keeping up their word, satisfaction guarantee. Jerry and my regular client Mike K from Denver also had similar experience when they returned the items bought from them. I'll have more on this story later.

The best flies were: Andy's Candy (both midge and mayfly)> iYong Special> iYong Flasher> Yong wing> Yong Blondie in order.

Happy fishing!

Hi Andy,
Bonnie and I wanted to thank you for another great trip! Bonnie and I both caught fish by seeing them take the fly this past week. Thanks again for all the great lessons and super flies. The improved yong special and improved young flasher where the ticket! Bonnie wants me to add she really feels like she made a big leap in her fishing skills with everything you taught her last Monday. Fishing with you is the really makes a great trip on the San Juan.
Thanks again,
Fred and Bonnie

Hi Andy,
Here is Jay the golf pro who lives in Germany. How's your game? I will be at the river the 4th of November. I will have my girlfriend with me and she has never fished ever. I would be honored if you could teach her. You are by far the best guide in the history of fly fishing. We could also play some golf and I could give you a bit of help along the way. How are things looking at this time of year?
Let me know if you have time and interest..
Talk to you soon
All the best
Jay

Hi Andy,
Thanks for another great day. I appreciate the time that we spent with you. Thanks for working with Dan on his nymphing technique. Could I ask you to forward me the picture of me sitting on the bank holding the big fish I caught on a dry fly?
All the best and we hope to see you again next year.
David

Hey Andy,
This was my third, or fourth time with you, and it was probably the best. I really appreciate you showing my brother, and nephew the ropes.I knew if I got them with you, the trip would be great, and it was. My nephew had only caught a couple of troutin his life, and has fished the Juan without any luck about 20 times, my brother had never caught one, or even handled a fly rod, and came from Georgia to go with me. They both were catching fish within 15 minutes, and both said it was a trip of a lifetime. The look on their faces, and the stories they told, are worth everything to me. We hooked or caught probably 50 fish the first day, and the 20+ incher he caught is still being talked about, and to top it off, my brother and I caught, or hooked about the same the second day without you, while nobody around us was catching anything both days. It just goes to show that I'am learning, even if you think I am hard headed. It is all in the great flies you tie, and the presentation you taught us. I will be in touch with you again, as soon as I can get my wife, and daughter up there. Thanks for being a great teacher with patience, and thanks for being a professional in every sense of the word.
See ya soon
Lee Christmas

Andy
we had a lot of fun and thanks for the teaching. The next morning wasn't as good but, oh well. What do I owe you for the flies and where should I send the check. Look forward to a seminar soon, when is a good time?
Tim

Hi Andy
Thanks for helping me with my fly fishing on the San Juan on Thursday. It was an enjoyable day.
Thanks again.

Hi Andy
Good to see you and thanks for your help in trying to teach us to fish. I might try to come out in March or April. Hope to see you when you come to LA.
Thanks Again,

Andy
Thanks for the great photos and the very helpful fishing session with you. I did not have the same success after you left but over the next few days but I caught several very nice trout. I particularly enjoyed fishing the Middle Flats and some of the other areas that I did not know existed.
Tom

Andy
Claire and I would like to thank you again for a great day of fishing. We fished on Friday by ourselves and it wasn't as productive. We expected that. We did catch fish just not as many. I caught the biggest on the dry fly.
Thanks

Andy
went up to the blue, i haven't really fished it, caught a small one on a blood up by bridge. water was really low, i found a nice little hole in back of 7-11, i put the same ak-47 on i used at yampa [ size 18 ] i saw like 7 dif fish rise, i casted to each one, everyone came after it. i must be doing something right . i landed only one. i missed them all. once i learn to hook them i would have caught 7 fish in 30 mins. same as Yampa.......my timing is late..ill figure it out!!! you told me once, thats the main fly you use in summer time... now i know why ... AK-47 rules !!!!!!!!!

Hi Andy
We just got back from our fishing trip. Spent some quality time in solitude catching nice brown trout on dries at the Conejo River. The day after we saw you, we went back to the same spot at Upper Flats. I caught 8 nice ones in the s l o w water on Yong Specials...caught onto the subtle takes without the indicator going down..just stopping slightly. We enjoyed having dinner with you. Let us know when you come to L.A.
Best fishes,

Andy
Thanks again for a fabulous day on the San Juan. Jeff and Chris had a great time, learned how to cast and fish to the trout upstream and downstream and most important came to like fly fishing more than any other type they've experienced. You'll also be happy to know that your students fished all day Friday and then we put in 5 hours on the water on Saturday before returning home. JEFF, out caught Chris and I both Friday and Saturday! On Saturday, Jeff hooked into a huge fish in the upper flat section we fished with you (near the big rock) and We had to walk downstream 100 yards and then across stream as it took out the backing down to about 10 turns of line left on the reel. He eventually lost him after 10 minutes but what a fish and fight. Had to be over 24 inches. As we saw it jump and it was one of the San Juan bulls. He wasn't yawning much after that one! Jeff did land the biggest fish Friday, 20" and then two nice 18 and 19 inch fish on Saturday. The best thing was on Saturday in the upper section, both Jeff and Chris were casting beautifully. I'll be fishing the river again Sept 16-20 with my buddy so I hope to see you there! Attached are some photos of Jeff's success on Fri/Sat. In a second email I'll send you a video of his big one that got away (some of the fight).
Best Regards,
Steve Setian

Hello everyone,

The river flow has been up and down couple of times and now back to 1,100 cfs and fishing has been very good to excellent both nymph and dry. Although there were few afternoon showers but less baetis hatch has occurred then I have expected. The crowds pressure has been dropped a bit last couple of weeks for some reason and that was good for us to cover more river. Again, NM Fish and Game stocked more trout 4-6 inchers on the quality water couple of weeks ago. I think this will make total of little more than 200,000 stocked trout this year alone and don't know why they keep stocking them instead of fixing the main cause of silt problem at Kiddy Hole wash. Good thing is we haven't had any real mini monsoon flash floods so fishing below Texas Hole is getting better with stocked trout. This time last year we had many excellent brown trout fishing especially dry fly fishing at Baetis Bend area but some reason the numbers of them were dropped. Impotant note, if you fish early or late then make sure carry insect repellent because mosquitoes won't leave you alone also recommend long sleeve shirt. The flow change email from BOR are below customer letters.

The best flies were: Yong Flasher> Andy's Candy Midge> Yong Special> AK-47> Yong Wing> Yong Blondie in order.

Happy fishing!

Andy,

Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our fishing trip. We just made it home and were looking at the photos you took of our days on the river. They are very well composed and are great reminders of the great time we had with you as our guide on the San Juan. It was a trip we will remember for a lifetime and the photos will help others see what we experienced (and prove that we caught big fish). We fished Tuesday morning and started out slow but as the day passed, we started hooking fish and ended up landing several good fish. No giants mind you, just good healthy 15-17 inch fish. Kenneth hooked a larger fish on an AK 47 and fought him the length of the kiddy pool; he eventually came off but after a good long fight. I hooked several fish initially, but eventually I begin to land them (no cussing).

Thanks again for your guidance, your teaching and your professionalism.
Sonja and Kenneth Hickingbottom

Hi Andy,

How are things going? I hope this email finds you in great health. Thanks again, I really had a great time fishing the San Juan, and I can't wait to do it all again. We have a lot of nice pictures that we will enjoy, and share with our family in the years to come. Hope to see you soon.

Take care,
Rebecca

Hey Andy,

I had the most amazing time up there learning the ins and outs of the San Juan. I have heard many stories of about "how good of a guide you are", fromMarcus. Now that trip has filled my photo album with new and exciting memories. Thank you for also showing me how to fish with dry flies, I still havemuch to learn and look forward to more instruction from you in trips soon to come. It's all about the "ANDY CANDY"! Take care and God Bless

Andrew

Andy my friend! How are you up there? Busy I bet. Andy, allow me to extend my most sincere thanks and appreciation for teaching me out on the river. It was my very first time on the San Juan as well as my first time fly fishing. Believe me, it is a blessing to have had those two experiences, not tomention a phenomenal guide, to foster one of the most cherishable memories I have ever had in the great outdoors. I am certain we will see each other again because I am "hooked" just like the one I caught with your help. Be safe and take care out there. Thanks again, Andy!

Remember...... stay still, you're making a buffet for the fish! (Laughing out loud)

Till next time,
Joel

Hi Andy

I wanted to let you know that Bill and I thoroughly enjoy having you as our expert fishing guide and friend. You definitely know what you are doing. Your photos are great, too.

I will recommend you to my friends and maybe my son, Ramsey, captain of the Sea Quest. Hope that we get to see you and fish again before we leave. Did you get your wader repaired. Sorry! You said that it was a size small. Was that a man's or ladies wader? It fit smaller than the one I tried, same brand, at Sports Authority.

Thanks again!
Ruth

Thank you for your support!

Due to slightly cooler and wetter conditions in the San Juan Basin, the Bureau of Reclamation will be decreasing the release from Navajo Reservoir to 900 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 9:00 a.m.

The target base flow is calculated as the weekly average of gaged flows throughout the critical habitat area, therefore daily flows of less than 500 cfs may occur at some gages.

Reclamation will continue to closely monitor weather and stream flow conditions and make adjustments to the Navajo Reservoir release as necessary. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Page at (970)385-6560 or e-mail him at ppage@uc.usbr.gov.

Hello everyone,

The flow has been around 500 cfs and visibility is about 4'. Encountered few prolific midge hatches and we even used size 18 Andy' Candy Midge pattern few times. Still there are few baetis hatch during afternoon conjunction with overcast or rainy weather so we caught few nice ones on Andy's Candy Mayfly. We also used AK-47 but less success than other patterns not like middle to end of spring runoff duration. Anyhow the spring runoff was short this year and we are having at least 95% of great fishing. I'd like to say 100% success but had few 3 people trips last couple of weeks and one of the group was tough especially when I couldn't get around them. Most people have no idea how difficult to have 3 beginner clients! Therefore I am considering to discontinue 3 people trips near future except those whom were with me few times. Since there are more fishing pressure lately the trout are getting smarter choosing flies even at KH and Texas Hole lately. Well, that's a good thing for us because I have the right patterns and still work much better than knockoffs from other flyshops. I just received the flow change notice from BOR, see below, this flow increase will help others to catch few trout because faster the water flow less time for them to investigate the fly before they decide to eat. Well, most trout are still healthy but about 20% of them are showing some signs of snagged marks.

The best flies were: Yong Flasher> Yong Special> Andy's Candy Midge> Yong Wings> Andy's Candy Mayfly> AK-47 in order.

Happy fishing!

Here are recent letters from you:

Hi Andy,

Just wanted to thank u again for the flies. On Sunday just above the lower flats I pulled out a 26" rainbow. Eric couldn't believe it. This was on the young flash. I was fishing in a deep section. Than on the lower flat caught about ten more all on the young flash. Only fished Sunday till 12:00. I did pull out a couple over 22. Most of the fish I caught I saw feeding and cast right above them. I just knew they would take your flies. There were three times I told Eric, I'm gonna catch that fish there. I would cast by them and they were on. I've never called out fish before. I'll be back up there in 2 weeks to hit the lower flats again. Take care.

Neal

Andy,

Good to see you. Had a great time. Hopefully I will retain some of the lessons learned. Did pretty good nymphing in the morning and early afternoon but didn't do so well with the dries. Hope to see you later this year, Thanks.

Brian

Great we had a great time also we laughed so hard after u left and driving home. Hey I would like to pay your air fare to come down and play golf let's look at October Nov when it is cooler let me know what works.

Andy,

Went to New Castle for a couple days, last Sunday and Monday. Fished the Fryingpan a couple days. Caught about 20 to 25 fish each day, mostly on dry fly. Fished Andy's Candy mayfly. Was great from about 1 to 4. Nothing big but had a lot of fun. Mostly 12 to 14 inches.

Later.
Tom

Hi,

We had a great time with you last Wednesday. We enjoyed the fishing, instruction and your personality very much. If you can get down this way, we would have a good time playing a couple of good golf courses.

Hello everyone,

The fishing has been great (see 2009 customer photos and my youtube) and it'll be even better than average after the spring runoff for couple of month (mid June-mid Aug). During the spring runoff, most trout won't get hurt much (less will be snagged by others) due to high water condition and those already have damages will be recuperated therefore they will be fight harder. I know just about everyone is stressed due to the bad economy but having lots of fun time to time will reduce your stress. Besides, someone once told me that God doesn't count days on the river so do something about it. Don't forget to read final spring runoff schedule below if you like to come fish soon.

The best flies were: iYong Special> Yong Flasher> AK-Salad> Yong Blondie in order.

Happy fishing!

Hello everyone,

The fishing has been very good to excellent. The flow has been around 500 cfs and the visibility is about 3'. I see more mayfly (baetis) hatches last few days along with midges. John and Tom from Denver had lots of fun dry fly fishing at Texas Hole using AC mayfly. Most of them they caught below Texas Hole were browns and you can see some of their photos on 2009 customer photos section. If you haven't checked out my youtube please do so, we're having so much fun catching. Barney from AZ had 6 in a row one afternoon and uploaded couple of videos. There was a time that two previous clients were fishing next to us made quadruple hookup! Still there's couple of more weeks to fish the SJ before the spring runoff so don't miss the fun.

Met couple of guys from ABQ the other day that accused me of putting extra weights on clients' line to make believe hooking more fish. I don't know where these kind of people hanging around but certainly not with my followers, too bad that there are people out there spreading the rumors about me like that. Over the years some even accused me that I wrote all the customer's testimonial letters, hmmm. Anyway I know that they are just jealous of our success catching many trout day and day out. Well, I'll keep on teaching my fly fishing system to anyone who comes for me so join the club and have lots of fun catching rather than slandering.

The best flies were: iYong Special> Yong Flash> AC mayfly> AC midge> Yong JR in order.

Happy fishing!

Hi Andy

I appreciate the instructions given last week on my role casting and drifting. I believe I expanded my knowledge and experienced much improvement Monday. Tuesday afternoon for me was exceptional with both AC Midge and AC nymphing techniques while revisiting the Texas Hole. Thanks much Andy.

Andy

I see the great pictures of us on the website. I'm watching youtube for more videos, too.

Had a great time fishing with your Sage rod. Tell me some more about it. I think it was a "line wt 0" Is the reel I used equipped with 1 or 0 wt line? Arrived home Sunday with all our junk. The flight out of Durango was nice.

Yours, John

Hi,

We have returned home to CB and its downright miserable. We have sent those fishing pictures out nationwide and surely you will be getting calls soon. Thanks again for a great afternoon.

Hi Andy, just wanted to tell you that on the 2nd day (friday 4/10/09) mike and chris had some really good hook ups and we had a great time. When they went off the river to make lunch, i stayed for a few minutes and caught a rainbow that was much larger than my one on the first day....Woo Hoo...but no one to take a picture...but i'll always remember it....We're busy planning two more trips (summer and fall)...talk to you soon, and thanks for a GREAT trip........dan dee

Hello everyone,

Very good news!

The river is clearing, about 3' visibility now. Dry fly fishing for both midges and baetis are picking up, best action so far this spring and I'm predicting that it may even get better for next 2-3 weeks. If you like to dry fly fishing then pick overcast days or fish with me because I can always find where they feed on top even on sunny days. We had some harsh cold and windy days but they were feeding great! Lots of 3" fingerlings they stocked last winter are already grown to 6"-8", those 9"-10" stockers are around 14" and feeding frenzy for both nymph and dry along with many larger ones. Due to intensive stocking it's hard to catch 18" or larger trout as we used to because those little guys were intercepting the flies before even drift to the target fish. Come on over soon if you can and join the action.

If you need to purchase my flies in hurry please give me a call (505-334-0909) or email me for when and where you are going to fish, I can tie them for the current condition.

The best flies were: Yong Special> Andy's Candy Midge and Mayfly> i-Yong Flasher> Yong Wings in order.

Happy fishing!

Good to see you on the river today. I had a great fish today. I just watched two recent You Tube videos of your clients, very good! YS black and YF black, no other flies today for me.

On a side note, thanks for all the help you given me on fly tying. I moved here 4+ years ago and while I did OK, I did not catch trout with the consistency that I do since I began tying your patterns.

Thanks again, David

Thanks for going fishing with me, I had a good time.

Hello everyone,

It has been very windy but fishing is still great for us. Even with 100,000 plus trout stocked past winter other fishermen are struggling to catch even couple. But the fishing will improve for others coming fall when those stockers (3" to 16") grow up. Those fingerlings can grow up to 1" per month so there will be lots of 13" to 14" this fall. Those who already use my flies and fly fishing system will also benefit from this, simply more trout to catch.

I have posted recent client's photos, check them out. Jerry told me that he fished below Texas Hole to Lower Flats couple of times last month with mixed result, first time was very good but second time was acceptable according to his report. By the way, Jerry won't be working for me this year due to his wife's health issue.

The river is still murky, no more than 2' visibility. So far not much baetis are hatching as I predicted. Currently midges from size 18-28 of many kinds are the main diet for trout and they are very selective on certain size and color.

The best flies were: i-Yong Special> i-Yong Flasher> Yong Blood> AK-Salad> Yong Wings in order.

Happy fishing!

Thanks for the pix, Andy, & for all the valuable instruction. The rest of our trip went well. Hope to fish with you another time.

Thank You, again, for a great experience on the Juan. You are The Best! I continue to learn from you, albeit, a bit slower than you would like. I felt like I made decent progress on our "Sight Fishing" exercise from when I started, to when we walked off the river. Thanks for your patience and coaching.

I really appreciated your positive encouragement for me perfectly nailing (setting) 5 trout on the nose (with 4 in a row)! That's just good Andy Kim Teaching & Coaching!!!

I look forward to receiving your photos. As discussed, I'll work on getting Dave and me getting back this summer. Please be Safe and be Well!

Respectfully with God's Blessing,

Week of March 16, 2009

Hello everyone,

It has been quite warm this past month and spring is about to knock on the door.

The fishing has been improved somewhat because F&G stocked more trout, I'm guessing about 80,000 trout were stocked this year already (3"-16") and more last year. According to Jerry whom talked to F&G biologist couple of months ago, the fishing has been good as it was and tons of big trout were residing in Main Channel above Texas Hole.

Well I do not know the exact reason why they are stocking the river heavily but I have seen more fishermen struggling last couple of years including many guides and perhaps that's the reason for stocking? Or could be Governor Bill Richardson's recent fishing trip wasn't good here with the guide service he had therefore he's spending more tax money to improve the river ($400,000)?.

Anyway F&G is doing a good job lately checking fishing license and barbed flies often on the river. Couple of days ago I heard one of well known guide service's client got cited using barbed fly and their service may pay the ticket. Not sure how much the citation will cost using barbed fly but as I have been telling everyone that always pinch the barb completely before you start fishing. I know that using barbed flies are not the main reason of deteriorating fishing on the SJ rather help keep trout healthy from snagged but still far better than other rivers as far as my opinion goes.

Recently I went to Lee's Ferry and fished Colorado River and it was bit disappointing because I believed the local fishing report that fishing had been good to excellent before I went there. I was catching about 15 trout plus half day at the Walk-In section but that wasn't what I expected. BTW, you can see my trip photos and videos on my youtube now. There were hardly no fly fishermen but encounter 8 bait fishermen on quality water using worms and power bait. It's sad to see increasing number of bait fishermen are intruding quality trout waters everywhere even on the San Juan.

Well back to the fishing report and here it is. The visibility has been about the same as last report, no more than 2'. Beware of baetis hatch on overcast days from now on for about 3-4 weeks therefore I recommend to stock up few Yong Wings and Andy's Candy Mayfly before you head to the river.

The best flies were: Yong Blood> Yong Flasher> Yong Special> Yong Wings> AK-Salad in order.

Happy fishing!

REVISED 2009 SPRING PEAK RELEASE
PROPOSED SCHEDULE
March 18, 2009

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

As a result of declining inflow forecasts, the Bureau of Reclamation has revised this year's planned Navajo Reservoir spring peak release from what had previously been reported at the Operations Meeting held January 27, 2009. A 21-day peak release of 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) is still planned; however the ramp up period will be over a one-week period rather than a one-month period as previously planned. The release will be increased by approximately 1,000 cfs per day beginning around the 3rd week of May. The release will remain at 500 cfs until the start of the ramp up.

A more detailed schedule showing daily release rates throughout the spring peak release period will be developed and provided to the public in April. The release pattern, duration, and magnitude for the spring peak release are in accordance with the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP) Flow Recommendations for Endangered Fish.

The scheduled spring peak release is subject to change based upon changing weather and hydrological conditions. If the current drying trend continues, further reductions in the duration of the spring peak release could result. To the extent possible, Reclamation will attempt to provide adequate notice on any significant changes to the proposed schedule. Week of February 23, 2009

Hello everyone,

I know many of you are wondering about future spring runoff, here's my prediction; so far the snow pack is little over normal years which mean mid to late May should be the target for start of spring runoff unless we get hammered with snow and rain storms in March but I doubt it could happen. FYI, normal spring runoff last about one month.

Fishing has been very tough for others as I said on my last report. Sorry to inform you this but most of you, even those who took a lesson or two from me may have hard time catching few on this murky water condition. On cold days they don't feed much until late in the afternoon and yet on overcast days they have been feeding all day. The good news is that the visibility has been improved a bit, about couple of inches. The bad news is that more fishermen are on the river nowadays and warmer weather also contributes. By the way, I got myself a new camera (Panasonic FZ28K) and have been taking some photos along with HD videos to put on youtube but so far they didn't come out well due to my lack of computer skills. I'll soon figure out how to upload HD videos on youtube for you to enjoy. I can hardly wait to try on upcoming clients though; it takes great photos with 18x optical zoom so when I have multiple clients I don't have to running around taking photos. There's one other good new, they stocked the river with tons of fingering trout and hopefully the fishing in late spring to rest of the year will improve for everyone.

With improved visibility, there are few places to sight fish right now although it will be very difficult for most of you therefore those who like to sight fishing I recommend you to hire me to have much better success furthermore you will also learn what to look for in this kind of condition in the future.

Here's interesting news, some of fishermen got cited recently because they didn't de-barb the flies. According to F&G officer, they were at the braids snagging spawning trout using 3 flies but since there's no posting about 2 fly limit sign hence he could only give them ticket for barbed flies. Remember, you are only allowed to use 2 flies or less like I have been teaching all along.

BTW, when ordering flies via mail please let me know when and where you are planning to fish because I can custom tie (size/ color) them for you at no extra cost.

The best flies were: Yong Special> AK-Salad> Yong Blood> Yong Wings> Andy's Candy in order.

Happy fishing!

Week of January 12, 2009

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year!

It's been long time since I posted last report.

First, I was gone most of Nov to take care my father and he's doing well now, thanks for the prayers to those whom care about us. While I was in CA I fished couple of times (King River, Laguna Lake) with my youngest brother John and it was very good, they do have some decent trout. Still my patterns were the best there; have out fished few local fly fishermen (fished there 13-14 yrs) that I've met on the King. Had some mayfly hatch so started out with Andy's Candy Mayfly but after the hatch tapered off we used AK-Salad and had a ball.

Like I have been telling everyone all these years, most trout need to eat whatever is available for them at the time. So match the hatch then you can catch them like me. Even my very first client, Larry S, who went to New Zealand couple of years ago where he had a great success using my pattern flies (AK-47, Y-Ugly) and surprised local guide there. Last few years lots of people have been using my patterns abroad including Korea http://riverfly.net/indexnew1.html, England and Japan. For those who want to learn how to catch fish like me, save your vacation time and come see me rather than sightseeing at the streams when you go fishing. Or at least try my flies, I do tie flies for lots of other streams and lakes. My fly fishing system is solely catching trout, as many as you can. While I'm at it, that is my definition of fishing!

When I'm guiding, I don't know many jokes to tell you because I'll be teaching you my system rather then just trying to get a couple of easy to get trout on deep and fast water. Sometimes your arms are going to be tired catching lots of trout, then we take a break and look at the scenery. Therefore if you like to enjoy scenery then I'm not the right guide for you. I want to be your teacher so you can learn my FF System and enjoy the rest of your life catching trout. Those who are my regular clients are sure having lots of fun catching trout everywhere.

Well, the San Juan fishing has been pretty good for me and previous clients who use my genuine flies even though the river is murky (about 1.5 visibility) due to lake turnover. Still there are many others who don't catch any. There were couple of pro guides on their own at the KH this past weekend where I fished couple of hours and they only caught one fish. No matter how good you are, you can get skunked. So learn to have the right fly at the right time. This is the Key to Success of fly fishing for trout!

For comparison, we received around 180% snow pack by end of Feb 2008 and therefore the BOR had a long spring runoff schedule (around 4000-5000 plus cfs March-June). So wading fishing was almost shut down last year during spring time to early summer. Now we are already close to 140% snow pack and spring is still couple of months away. If we keep getting this kind of precipitation from Pacific Coast then the BOR needs to release water soon so it can help the wading fishermen in the spring time. Hope they start to care about fly fishermen more in the future to sustain the excellent trout fishery we have.

The best flies were: Yong Special> Yong Flasher> Andy's Candy midge> AK-Salad> Yong Wings in order.

BTW, you are invited to see some of my recent action fishing videos on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/yspecial1

Happy fishing!

Week of September 22, 2008

Hello everyone,

Couple of things, first my webmasters computer had some problem so couldn't update fishing report until now and second the flow has been changed a few times.

Well, fishing has been hot because just about every trip we landed few 20 plus trout, check out 2008 photos! There were some prolific midge hatches here and there throughout the day since last report which gave us opportunities catch lots of big trout on Andy's Candy Midge and Mayfly dry fly up to 23 long. Its happening all the way from the dam area to bait fishing section now. Although we still catch lots of nice trout using nymphs when trout arent rising much but I get the kick out of teaching dry fly fishing to new clients because they get so excited catching trout on dry fly.

Fished couple of CO high mountain creeks with friends, it was lots of fun catching them using AK-47, Y-Ugly and Andy's Candy. We caught lots of little trout 4-15, I mean 4,5,6 in a row!

The SJ is clear and running around 700 cfs. It's finally getting cool in the morning so I have to wear windbreaker to start out the day. There are spots still having few mosquitoes but they are going away, guess winter is coming.

The best flies were: Andy's Candy Midge> Yong Special> Yong Flasher> Yong Wings> Yong Blood in order.

Happy fishing!

Hi Andy,

Thanks so much again for an outstanding day on the San Juan. I learned a lot and caught some wonderful fish.

I have always been impressed by people, in all industries, that are truly exceptional at what they do. Andy, you definitely fall into the exceptional category. I look forward to fishing with you again in 2009 in September. Dates to follow from me and/or mike.

Andy, please send along the pictures of the wonderful that I caught with you, particularly the 23.5 inch bow on the dry. I have some bragging to do and need those photos for my big fish album.

Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you again and fishing with you in 2009. Also, Im working on wife options for you as we discussed.

Al the best,

David P. Shatto (Dave)

Andy,

Thanks once again for a great time on the San Juan this last Monday. My family really enjoyed the fly-fishing experience. Now they've learned a new outdoor skill that they can put to use for the rest of their lives..with practice of course.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. With any luck, maybe I'll see you again on the river this year.

Warm regards,

Marshall

Hi Andy,

Hope you are well. Jad and I enjoyed our weekend on the San Juan. It was a pleasure meeting you.

Hope to see you soon.

Best,

Marc M. Rose

Well your name is every where. We went to Montana and came back through Yellowstone. I fished the Gros Venture in Teton National Park. Afterwards a guy drove up and said the Moose should be coming out. We started talking fishing and I asked him if he had fished the San Juan, he said no, but he did have a video from a guy from their and I said really, he said his name was Andy Kim. I said this is my buddy and he can catch fish just like the video.

How's the fishing, need to make up there.

Scott

Dear Andy,

Thank you, Thank you for the best flyfishing trip of my life. We had so much fun and I learned a lot from you in just a short time. I am very fortunate to have spent time with you on the river and am inspired to practice more. Andy, you are the greatest!

Happy Fishing and Best regards,

Johnny from Denver

Andy,

Caught several nice fish on Wednesday and Thursday, including a 20-incher on a dry fly on my last cast on Thursday. Couldn't have done it without your expert advice. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos you took.

Enjoyed fishing with you. The San Juan is amazing.

Hello everyone,

Reminder: The mini monsoon season is here so don't forget to pack your rain jacket and insect repellent. The rates went up a little - $5.00 for half day trips, $10.00 for the full day trips.

Flow is steady around 500 cfs, visibility is 2 1/2 -3 feet and fishing has been good to excellent depending on where we have fished. There were good baetis (around 2 to 5 pm, sunset) and midge hatches (9 am till dark) last couple of weeks so dry fly fishing has been good. We are still catching a lot more than anyone around us; not hard to do though because most fishermen aren't catching any.

Paul Q who is a client from TX told me over dinner that he met one S.J. veteran fisherman from 27 yrs ago that got skunked for the first time a few days ago. It's not easy to catch S.J. trout now a days because they are more educated than other river trout so you have to think like them (use right fly/techniques). Due to slow fishing condition for others, lots of other fishermen are closing in on us just about every time I guide because they think fish are only feeding where we are. They are the ones who have the honey holes. I don't start early like other guides so by the time we get to the river all the honey holes are taken but we still catch a lot more and could catch more if people upstream didn't do the San Juan Shuffle.

For those of you who don't know about the S.J. Shuffle - when you move your feet around while you fish, trout will gather below you, where the disturbed water is flowing and line up to feed. Some fishermen do this because they don't have the right flies. Next, they align themselves with the congregated feeding fish downstream and try to catch them. I see more people doing the S.J. Shuffle below the dam area. This includes some other guides which makes me sick. They set up their clients on either side of the main channel and then the guide wades across to take care of the other client. The trout then line up in that area where he or she was wading. Then they move their clients to the area and toss their lines there. Most S.J. Shufflers use at least one big fly (San Juan worm, bunny leech, etc) and others perhaps the same size or smaller on the line. They mostly snag fish by setting the hook by swiping hard at the end of the drift. The health of the trout has deteriorated since the end of the spring run off last June. Thus you'll see trout missing one eye, have dark spots (black head, tail), scar marks, broken jaws, etc due to many having been snagged. I've been retrieving lots of flies broken off on the fish. They have been snagged along the belly, tail and fins. This is occurring from the dam all the way downstream to Baetis Bend.

Furthermore, we had a flash flood about 10 days ago. This contributed to a heavy silt deposit in the TX Hole downstream all the way to bait fishing section. Fishing down stream is slowing down, thus more people are gathering from the TX Hole upstream to below the dam. I wish I were a NM Fish & Game authority then I could talk to BOR to release 5000 cfs couple of nights to clear up recent silt deposit to make fishing better down stream but I'm not. We need someone in that Fish & Game department who cares about this precious river!!!!

The best flies were: Andy's Candy midge and mayfly> Yong Special> Yong Wings> AK-47> Yong Blondie (maroon)> AK-Salad in order.

Happy fishing!

Andy Kim

Hi Andy,

I am so glad I met your guide Jerry and he was able to introduce me to you. I have fished the San Juan 6 times and have had ok fishing and got skunked a couple times. The flies I bought from you and the advice you gave me was just the ticket. The next two days I caught more fish per day that I have could possibly have imagined. I had 2 guides around me and I caught more fish than their clients with your flies. You know the river so well and I will always contact you to buy flies before I go to the San Juan. I have a friend that wants to be guided and you will be the one I will contact for him. Thank you,

Alan Aragon

Mr. Kim,

Thank you for all your help and teaching me to fly fish. Sincerely,

Hello everyone,

The ant fall finally happened yesterday (July 14th) and my first time clients (father and son) had a blast using AK-47 fly in addition Ken (father) landed back to back 20" plus fat bow middle of it. This ant fall happens once every year and may last up to 2 days (mostly one day) and very hard to predict exact time of occurrence but safe for me to say around mid June-mid July right after heavy rain storm.

Besides that fishing is still excellent for us just about everywhere from below the dam all the down to bait fishing section although many other fishermen are struggling. There was a prolific baetis hatch on past Sunday afternoon and dry fly fishing was fantastic from Texas Hole to downstream below. I'm predicting this can happen for next few weeks under overcast afternoon condition so have some Andy's Candy mayfly and Yong Wings on you.

Most trout are still very healthy but few of them are starting to show signs of hook marks on lips and also snagging marks. Remember, the new rule is now you can only use 2 flies (make sure pinch the barb) or less, which I have been advocate for before even started guiding 14 yrs ago by watching many fishermen including few guides damaging trout by snagging them using 3 to 5 flies on the line. It is quite easy to spot someone is trying to snagging fish, just watch someone shuffles (toss the line forward and walk backward) and fish below chum line or someone swipe the line downstream very hard to snag anything where flies are drifting. To help quality of the San Juan trout year-round I don't mind if they decide to go with one fly only rule!

The flow is steady and visibility is still around 2 1/2 -3'.

The best flies were: Yong Flash> AK-47> Andy's Candy (both midge/ mayfly)> Yong Wings> Yong Special in order.

Happy fishing!

Andy Kim

Dear Andy:

Thank you again. Rebecca had a great time and improved her fishing skills. You keep getting better and better at your abilities to catch fish and teach clients what they need to know to follow in your footsteps. We had a great weekend and look forward to seeing you the next time you are up here or we can make it down there. Please send the fiber material to the address below.

Hi Andy,

You don't know me and hopefully, some day, I will get the chance to meet you and have you guide me on the San Juan. I just want to take a minute and thank you for sharing your midge patterns using the C "&" C thread and twisting techniques on both your larvae and pupae patterns.

I'm from SW Pennsylvania and fish mostly on a couple streams that are know for some very large, picky and well educated trout that get lots of fishing pressure. Using your larvae and pupae designs, I have guys following me around trying to figure out the secret on my success. I hand out a lot of flies and try to help them with the techniques, but few have the success that I do, especially in landing a good many nice size browns and rainbows.

What made me write this note was that I gave some flies to a guy a few weeks ago, and he replied, those are Andy Kim's flies. As it turned out, you guided him a couple years ago and he could not say enough about you. Just wanted to pass that on. Can't recall his name, but he said the next time you guide for him, he will tell you about the guy from Pa he ran into that "cleans up" using your flies.

Take care, good luck and wish you many happy days of fishing,

Hugh Shearer

Andy,

I received the video yesterday and popped it into the VCR immediately. It was fun to watch, you definitely catch a lot of fish. It really got me pumped up to go to the San Juan, and hopefully we can be as successful as you were on the video, it would be nice to catch some better quality fish!!!

Thanks,

Kirk Colburn

Andy,

I was able to receive but not send emails in Durango. Thanks for a great time on the San Juan. I learned a lot and now I have to break several bad habits that I should not even have and practice casting. I look forward to receiving the video. I asked my wife what she wanted to do today, in that I had been fishing twice with you this week and she said, "can we just go home a day early?" She had been in Utah with our daughter who just had a baby a few weeks ago last week so had been gone for two weeks. We came home today and found everything in good order. As I was unpacking my fishing gear, I am already thinking of when I can get back up you way.

Thanks again for the good and patient instruction.

Bill Woolf

Hi Andy,

Again, thank you for the great afternoon. We were just looking at the photos and saying "how wonderful it and you are!!!!!!!!!!. We walked off with your bug repellent, now you have to come for dinner to get it back.

Hello everyone,

The flow is around 550 cfs and visibility is about 2-3' depends on certain areas.

Fishing has been very good although we didn't catch many 20" plus past week as prior week. Had decent rain storm the other day but no "Ants Fall" occurred perhaps next big thunderstorm will bring them. Last few days I have noticed increasing baetis hatch during overcast hours and some of trout actually taking dun baetis (BWO) on surface. Most of them still taking emerger stage baetis so we have used Yong Wings with full wings on and caught lot.

Note, there are prolific mosquito hatches especially during the evening hours and during the day on some places so make sure carry some insect repellant with you.

The best flies were: Yong Special> Yong Wings> Andy's Candy (both midge/mayfly)> Yong Blondie in order.

Happy fishing!

Hello everyone,

Fishing is very HOT now. Hope you can get to the river soon!

Finally the flow is back to normal at 500 cfs. The fishing during 4000-3000 cfs was hit and miss because we couldn't get to many places. Still, we did better than other fishermen as usual.

When the flow went down to 1500 cfs a few days ago, we're catching big trout left and right even with 2 beginners. On the same day Dave G who is regular client landed 3 trout in a row over 20-22 1/2" and I tell you that doesn't happen very often. Trout are mostly heavy side, small head but wide body so they fight hard now.

The visibility is about 2 1/2' or better on some places thus we used my sight fishing system to catch most of fish. I do have few cancellations in July and Aug so those who plan last min trip please check with me.

The best flies were: Yong Special (maroon, brown, cream)> Yong Blondie> Yong Wings> Yong Blood> AK-47 in order.

There's baetis hatch around 2-3 PM and also in the evening so have some Yong Wings (size 20-22) handy.

Like to remind you that Ants Fall can occur any day after heavy rain from now on thus make sure carry some AK-47 flies in your fly box.

Happy fishing!

Andy Kim

Hello everyone,

We're having long spring runoff but it is about to end. My prediction for upcoming fishing will be fantastic, trout should be in excellent shape due to very few fish have been caught by others every time I was on the river either guiding or my own fun fishing for last few months. At least I know where few 22" plus trout hanging around currently and they may still be there for next few days. Also within a month or so there will be famous "Ants Fall" thus be prepare to have some AK-47s in your fly box. I'm very anxious to see clear water to target fish again and it already is about 3' visibility so when the flow goes down to 500 cfs fishing will be whole lot easier.

BTW, Jerry's wife Sandy is going thru lung cancer treatment currently thus he has to stand by her most of the time therefore no guiding trips for him rest of the year.

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR RELEASE
June 16, 2008

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

As the 2008 Spring Peak Release from Navajo Reservoir comes to an end, the Bureau of Reclamation will begin ramping down the release starting Thursday, June 19, 2008. Please note that the ramp down duration has been slightly modified from the previous schedule distributed on May 8, 2008. The attached chart shows the revised daily release rates. Once the ramp down is complete on June 25, 2008, the release will remain at 500 cubic feet per second (cfs) until further notice.

Releases are made for the authorized purposes of the Navajo Unit, and to attempt to maintain a target base flow through the endangered fish critical habitat reach of the San Juan River (Farmington to Lake Powell). It is likely that increases in the release will be necessary later in the summer in order to maintain the target base flow.

If you have any questions, please contact Pat Page at (970) 385-6560 or e-mail him at ppage@uc.usbr.gov

Hello everyone,

The river condition (visibility and floating debris) has gotten better during last few days. The visibility is 1 1/2 to 2' range now and it'll get clear soon enough (within a month) in my opinion.

Dave who's new to fly fishing and Bob who's regular client had great time catching bunch including 4 double hookups. We actually did some sight fishing at the MF in the afternoon and one of them was very healthy fat unusual looking 21' rainbow, most of them were 18" though. One of the double hookup, Dave's 16" brown and Bob's 21" will be posted on photo gallery section soon. The KH still producing lots of trout for us (at least couple of dozen) as usual but half of them were under 14". But don't let those small trout to fool you, they fight very hard since they have been eating good and not been caught. All in all, they hooked near 40 and landed more than half.

Still, all other fishermen I talked either at the parking lot and whom gathered around us told me that fishing's been very slow, catching nothing to couple of trout all day. They don't believe how many fish we catch so had to show photos I took to prove our success.

Hi

We were watching you fish the other day on the San Juan River. My wife was saying it was better than the Movies. We were very impressed. We would like a copy of your tape if it will show how to roll cast? I would like to get the right tackle before we come back to go fishing next time? Hopefully this summer. About the Roll Casting you were doing, were you using a W.F. floating line, or a D.T. floating line? What line weight, and Brand should I buy? Do you like the easy loop-type line/leader connection, or a nail knot? I have a 5-6 line weight Fennwick 81/2 ft. rod. Will this roll cast OK? Or what Rod should I get and how long? How long should my Tippets be and what strength is best for the San Juan? When you use a Strike Indicator what is best for roll casting? What size fly fishing shot should I use, and how far in front of my fly should it be? Should I use 2 Fly's or 1? And how far apart should they be? When We plan a trip we will get back in touch with you and book a guided fishing day with you on the San Juan.

Thanks

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

Due to decreasing inflow forecasts and after conferring with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the release pattern and duration of the spring peak release has been modified.

In the last Navajo Release Notification (dated May 5, 2008), we announced that the Bureau of Reclamation would begin ramping up the release from Navajo Reservoir beginning May 9, 2008. That scheduled change has been cancelled. Releases will continue at the present rate of 2,200 cubic feet per second (cfs) through the weekend of May 9th, 10th and 11th.

The release will be decreased from 2,200 cfs to 1,000 cfs on Monday, May 12th. The release will remain at 1,000 cfs until Monday, May 19th, when it will be increased to 2,000 cfs. The release will remain at 2,000 cfs until Friday, May 23rd, when it will be increased to 3,000 cfs. The release will remain at 3,000 cfs through Monday, May 26th. On Tuesday, May 27th, releases will be increased to 4,000 cfs and the following day, Wednesday, May 28th, releases will be increased to 5,000 cfs. Beginning on Thursday, June 19th, the release will begin to be gradually decreased until it reaches 500 cfs on Wednesday, July 2nd. The attached chart shows the daily release rates throughout the spring peak release period.

At various times throughout the spring peak release, the release will be temporarily reduced in order to accommodate required inspections of the outlet works. These inspections are tentatively planned to occur on June 10th, and the week of June 23rd. Additional notices will be provided in advance of each of these inspections.

Adjustments may be made to the spring peak release duration if the inflow forecasts change. Reclamation will provide updates to the release schedule if any changes occur. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Page at (970) 385-6560 or e-mail him at ppage@uc.usbr.gov.

Hello everyone,

This is preliminary flow info that I got it from BOR today, they'll send me finalized email next week.

May 9th - 3000 cfs

May 16th-4000 cfs

May 23rd-5000 cfs then back down to normal flow July 6th

The condition ( visibility/ dead algae drift) of the river has improved bit now. The flow has been around 2,200 cfs, which is safe flow to wade most places.

Had couple of new clients from TX last weekend and they had a great time while everyone try to fish right next to us because we're the ones catching. While we're taking photos at the bank some of them moved right in without asking us where we have been fishing, they were getting desperate to catch anything. That didn't matter though, we're catching fish all day, around 35 hooked landed 20 including 2 brown trout. The fishing has been tough for others because even in this murky water condition SJ trout still feed on right kind of flies and we have them.

The best flies were: IMP Yong Special> Reg Yong Special> Yong Blood> Yong Flash in order

Happy fishing!

As a result of a drier than average March, and based on the April 1st inflow forecast, the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center is now predicting an inflow of 1,220,000 acre-feet (af) into Navajo Reservoir, which is a decrease of 180,000 af from the previous forecast. As a result, when the ongoing inspections to the outlet works are completed this week, the Bureau of Reclamation will only be increasing the release from the reservoir to 2,200 cfs rather than the 4,000 cfs originally scheduled. The release will be gradually increased from 1,600 cfs beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008, until it reaches 2,200 cfs by 11:00 am later that morning.

Subject to updated forecasts and changing hydrological and weather conditions, the release will remain at 2,200 cfs until the middle of May, at which time the release will be increased to 5,000 cfs where it will remain until approximately the end of June. More detailed information will be provided on the timing and duration of the 5,000 cfs release as forecasts are updated.

Based on its March 1st forecast, the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center is predicting an inflow of 1,400,000 acre-feet (af) into Navajo Reservoir this spring/early summer. This is an increase of approximately 100,000 af over the previous (mid-February) forecast, and correlates to 181% of the average inflow. As a result, the Bureau of Reclamation will be increasing the release from Navajo Reservoir to 4,000 cfs on Monday, March 10, 2008. Hello everyone,

It's been cold and getting lots of snow every few days but the SJ River still runs through it. BTW, I was gone for few days to visit my family in CA so no fishing report but I'm planning to check out the river this afternoon.

Many of you are wondering what will happen when the flow goes up to 3000 cfs so here I can clear up few things.

First, it can be harder to wade on certain places meaning that any fishing holes deeper than 3' now may not be able to wade across safely thus highly recommend to bring wading staff and I do carry many extras for my clients. Second, trout will move to new areas, for instance in the Kiddie Hole fish will move from deeper water to currently shallower water area and this will be the case everywhere. Third, the fish will hit harder when you use right flies meaning that not much subtle strikes as low flow. Fourth, the higher the flow the conditioning of trout will be at best so they will fight much harder. Lastly, make sure help elders or kids you bring wade together to get to point A to B and here's how: strong person stay upstream to break the current and others wade right below downstream side.

If you never fished the high flow then make sure go out with me on your first part of your trip then you'll learn where to fish safely and have much better success.

If you have any questions feel free to email me or call me in the evening at 505-334-0909.

The recent snowstorm in the Four Corners Area resulted in an increase in the current snowpack in the San Juan Mountains to 169% of average and the current forecast calls for an estimated 1,300,000 acre-feet inflow into Navajo Reservoir this spring/early summer, which is 168% of average. As a result, and following discussions with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Reclamation will be increasing the release from Navajo Reservoir to 3,000 cfs beginning Monday, February 11, 2008. The release will be increased by approximately 1,000 cfs per day, which will result in the release reaching 3,000 cfs on Wednesday, February 13, 2008. Subject to a dramatic change in the basin hydrology and forecasted inflow estimates, the release will likely remain at 3,000 cfs until May, at which time the release will be ramped up to 5,000 cfs where it will remain for approximately 30 days. More information will be provided on the timing and duration of the 5,000 cfs release as we get closer to May.

Releases are made for the authorized purposes of the Navajo Unit, and to attempt to meet flow recommendations for the endangered fish in the San Juan River. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Page at (970) 385-6560 or e-mail him at ppage@uc.usbr.gov.

Hello everyone,

Currently the visibility is around 10-12" and average flow at 710 cfs.

Fishing has been good for us but not to others still, most people I talked on the river and parking lot, very few caught more than 3 per day and at least 50% of them got skunked. It's a fact that SJ trout are well educated fish thus you must use right kind of flies even in this murky water condition. Majority of fishermen on the river are locals (from Durango, Farmington, ABQ, Santa Fe) but they can't figure out what to use and ask me for advise.

I noticed many smaller size trout (under 15") are above Cable Hole now but they were in great shape, almost look like silvery steelhead. Had hotter fishing below Texas Hole lately though and most of them were 17" plus. There have been midge hatch throughout the day also sporadic baetis hatch during mid day and their size varies from size 20-30.

Hello everyone,

The river got murkier now than last report, about 10" visibility now and I don't think it'll get any worse. Although you can hardly see any trout but fishing is still very good for us. Believe it or not I like fishing in this kind of condition time to time because less people are on the river and never know the size of fish you'll get.

They are still feeding in normal areas and every once in awhile you may see few trout rises. Chris Richards who is Jerry's son landed big 25" bow from Kiddy Hole on Christmas, see 2005-current photo section.

It's been very cold but as long as dress yourself warm then you can still have lots of fun. One thing I do recommend you is that get few disposable handwarmer, they claim each pack will last up to 8 hours but sometimes it can get wet so carry extras.

Please avoid spawning trout and their bed at all cost on shallow riffle waters (less than 1' deep mostly) this winter, they are the ones you can see nowadays and usually paired up 2 or 3 showing fins and tails. I know few locals going after them this time of the year but they are not in feeding mood thus get ended up snagged which throw them off spawning activity.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Went fishing by myself today for couple of hours. It was cold but excellent fishing, met Ken who mail order my flies at the parking lot and fish together for few min at Middle Flats. Noticed the river got bit murky now, about 1 1/2'-2' visibility so had difficulty sight fishing but didn't matter because they were hungry. Ken and I had a double hookup right away and I caught several more on one or two cast there. They were hitting Yong OJ and Yong Blood hard. There was couple of guys upstream from us but they left after I got half dozen quickly. After 2 more trout landed and the last one was 21" bow before I moved down to upper section of Kiddy Hole. Caught 3 more sight fishing there after that moved to Kiddy Hole. Tons of midges were coming off but no rises at the time and that was ideal condtion for Yong Special/ Improved Yong Special combo on AK-Pro Leader without any indicator. I couldn't see any fish there due to murky water condition thus I had to fish blind but found out they also were very hungry because I was catching one every 1-3 cast. The biggest one landed was beautiful male cutbow, just shy of 22" long, couldn't resist taking few photos of him and I'll post one on my Andy's Gallery someday when we finish touch on my website. FYI I didn't see anyone catching except Ken while I was fishing.

Well, it's about that time of the year for lake to turn over. Didn't have a time to go up to reservoir to check the clarity but I'm guessing it should be similar condition like this throughout the winter. This means less dry fly fishing from now on but they will still come up on snowy and overcast days. If you need some flies next year then this is good time to order so stock them up early.

Happy fishing!

Hello everyone,

The river is going back up to 750 cfs today.

250 cfs flow brought us very good dry fly action for both midge and mayfly (baetis). We mainly fished the dam area to Texas Hole last few weeks and did very well producing few 20 to 22? bows.

The river is still clear and easy to sight fish for larger trout. Still the trout below the dam fight like big steelhead and those who want hard fighting trout should head up there.

Lots of trout were congregated on deep pools and some riffles but noticed couple of fishermen at the Texas Hole was snagging them consistently which made me sad.

Also saw someone cleaned a trout along the KH banks and a fisherman keeping 17-18? bow, as you know it I asked him not to take that trout but he got mad at me cussing and left there with his trout. There were others but none of them supported me on my action; guess they were scared of that guy or something. Over the years I caught many fishermen taking undersize trout (more than one) using bait and talked to them to release the trout and go fish the bait fishing area. I'm here to save your resources and yet getting no support from any other fishermen. Furthermore, the river banks are getting dirty with beer cans and bottles more than ever. I noticed couple of beer cans by Kiddy Hole path few days ago so decide not to pick them up this time and they were still there couple of day ago! Most people don't appreciate how much I care about the river for that I'm not going to pick up any garbage but my own for next few months and see.

Went to visit my folks in Los Angeles for Thanksgiving and had a great time and hope you did too.

My youngest brother wanted to go fishing while I was there so went to Kern River for the first time. He mentioned that fishing was very slow on his last trip and local website BBS also agree on that part. My mother and two nieces tag along to enjoy the scenery. I was surprised by size of the river and its location, only 2 hrs from my brother's house which is located near Magic Mountain Amusement Park and yet it produced decent size trout up to 17. Most of them were stockers but at least two I landed weren't. My mother didn't feel good after the lunch so we ended up fishing little over an hour but still hooked 14 or 15 and landed 8. They were starting to rise last few min before we left and I could have lot more. All in all, it was fun to fish a new place and I'll visit Kern again in the future and next time I want to try below the dam area.

The best flies were: Yong Special> Yong Wings> Andy's Candy (midge and mayfly)> Andy Salad in order.

If any of you are going to fish Kern River next few month try Andy's Candy midge, Yong Special, Yong Blood, Yong Wings and don't forget the Salad.

Hello everyone,

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR RELEASES
November 8, 2007

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

The Bureau of Reclamation will be decreasing the release from Navajo Reservoir from 750 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 250 cfs, at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 26, 2007. The release is being reduced to assist in Phase III of a trout habitat improvement project on the San Juan River (Phases I and II were completed the previous two years). The location of the project will be near the Cottonwood Campground area in the quality waters section of the San Juan River downstream of Navajo Dam. The project, a joint effort between several agencies, will encompass approximately 4,900 linear feet of river channel and will include the installation of 17 bank deflectors, 19 rock clusters, 5 log jamb structures, 40 single habitat rocks, and 7 excavated pools. The project is anticipated to be completed in ten days. The release will be increased to 750 cfs on December 7, 2007, or sooner if the project is completed earlier. It is anticipated that releases will remain at 750 cfs throughout the winter.

If you have any questions on the trout habitat improvement project, please contact John Hansen with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Farmington, NM at (505) 599-6325, Marc Wethington with the New Mexico Game & Fish Department at (505) 632 8818, or Steve Mueller with Navajo State Park at (505) 632-2278

Hello everyone,

Had another great week, at least half dozen 21" to 23 1/2" landed last week. Steve H who is one of my regular clients landed 23 1/2" when he was fishing with his brother the day after I guided him. The biggest one this fall so far was on the line yesterday by Bob S, from AZ, my estimate was at least 25" below but didn't bring him in. The trout pulled backing line out several times and ran around big rocks at the bottom then broke loose after about 10 min fight although we chased him downstream. Most trout are very healthy so beware they can give you pleasant pain on your rod holding arm. Dry action is still better than average on sunny days, if you happen to hit SJ on an overcast day within next few weeks then you better prepare for what may be one of your hottest dry fly fishing day and make sure have some Andy's Candy Midge/ Mayfly with you.

The flow is still around 750 cfs and better than average visibility. Fishing has been very good to excellent for us thus most of the time other fishermen moved in on us as have been all these years, couple of weeks ago one of the fishermen got desperate and actually crossed over my clients line several times intentionally. I can't understand why some people do things like that because there are plenty trout on other places.

The best flies have been Yong Flasher> Andy's Candy Midge> Yong Special> AK-Salad in order.

Hello everyone,

It has been long time since I have posted last fishing report. I don't know who was sabotaging my website but this person didn't want to see my customers' happy letters on my fishing report section in my opinion. A while back I read a posting somewhere saying that I made up all the customers' testimonial letters and their fishing success story emails and perhaps that was the person screwed up my Discussion Board. Anyhow, I have new webmaster who has been my friend and student for few years will be working on my website from now on.

I'm sure many of you heard that fishing on the SJ has been very slow but not true, fishing has been very hot on dry and nymph both for us as usual. Lots of people told me on the river that they couldn't catch anything all day and many of them hired us last min during past few months.

We have been catching lots of browns down at Baetis Bend to Lower Flats and healthy fat bows all the way to the Dam area from there. The weather this time of the year can't be hard to predict but I predict more hatches on both baetis and midges until first part of Dec so those who enjoy dry fly fishing make your time and come on up. The river has been very clear since the spring runoff but lately some dead algae are floating down and it's about that time of the year. About the crowds, maybe couple of times I have seen parking lots got full during some weekend so my guess is many people have been avoiding fishing the SJ.

The best flies have been Andy's Candy Midge> Yong Special> Yong Flasher> AK Salad in order

Happy fishing!
